Full description

Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV1142.

Cabbage ball coppice, south whilborough. Vis=-/9/1972 (gallant). Limekiln in coppice almost at top of hill. Remains only just detectable - part of curved corbelled roof of antechamber jutting out of present slope of debris. Built of shaly limestone.(1) in production in 1838. On tithe map + apportionment. Field 872 is called "cabbage ball lime kiln", but the kiln is actually marked on neighbouring field 873 "cabbage ball coppice".(2) apparently out of use by 1890, and not marked on ordnance survey map.(worksheet).

Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV306461.
