Full description

Anon, 1862, Proceedings of the Congress of the British Archaeological Association at Exeter, 159 (Article in Serial). SDV336579.

Lady Chapel at St Mary's parish church in Ottery St Mary. Almost certainly built by Bishop Grandisson in the 14th century.

Cresswell, B. F., 1916 - 1917, Sittings in Churches, 117 (Article in Serial). SDV15403.

In the Lady Chapel in St Mary's parish church there remains a medieval stone bench.

Cresswell, B. F., 1922 - 1923, Bosses and corbels in the church of Ottery St Mary, 97-100 (Article in Serial). SDV126191.

Cresswell describes and illustrates two bosses in the Lady Chapel, one depicting the Madonna and Child, the other Christus Judex. She notes that neither equal the quality of those in the choir even though they are of a later date. A number of carvings of the human head at the base of the corbels appear to be portraits, or attempts to reproduce the characteristics, of Bishop Grandisson's kinsfolk.

Reed, H., 1927, Architectural Notes on Some Churches Visited During the Congress., 172-8 (Article in Serial). SDV256355.

The Lady Chapel has a very unusual feature in the minstrel's gallery, which separates it from the ambulatory, and a carved wooden and gilded lectern, coeval with the college, with the arms of Grandisson on a globe. Some of the old misericords are to be seen here too.
