Full description
Peacock, D. P. S., Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV96857.
Kirwan in 1871, found numerous fragments of pot, coarse and unglazed, some with incised decorations. Pre-roman.(kirwan). Hutchinson described this as being red, and "about the quality of flowerpots".(hutchinson). Illustrated in hutchinson's ms volume of "a history of sidmouth". Carter's excavations of 1929 also produced pottery on the surface of natural soil at the foot of the vallum, under an accumulation of debris. Identified as iron age and romano-british in date.(carter). Pottery from 1871 and 1929 reassessed by pollard. Hutchinson's drawings suggest the 1871 sherds were of imported mediterranean ware (5th-6th centuries ad); carter's pottery was neolithic and dark age. Neolithic pottery from the 1961 and 1964 excavations was similar to that from hembury, and had two main types of fabric, fine and coarse. The dark age pottery was of types b(i), b(ii), and b(iii), imported mediterranean amphorae. Dated to ad 475-circa 650, but mainly 5th-6th century.(pollard). Of 138 sherds of neolithic pottery examined, 4 per cent was of lizard gabbroic ware giving valuable clues to neolithic trade or exchange with high peak settlement (peacock).
