Full description
Hutchinson, P. O., 1872, Iron Pits, 48 (Article in Serial). SDV338417.
Numerous iron pits in the area between Pool, Punchardon, Saint Hill and Henland Farms. Known locally as ash pits, they were excavated in search of iron ore.
Downes, W., 1882, Chert Pits, 317-321 (Article in Serial). SDV338418.
Downes disagrees with Hutchinson's conclusions regarding E Devon iron pits, saying there is no real evidence of ironworking. Suggests the pits were dug to quarry chert for building material.
Harris, G. T., 1930, Iron Pits in East Devon, 39-40 (Article in Serial). SDV338415.
Harris sides with Downes in the view that these pits were for chert extraction.

Visited 21/8/1992. This area was not fully investigated although the area N of the road between Saint Hill and Hollis Green was generally looked at, the two circular patches of thistles were observed at above NGR.
