Summary

A group of iron pits on the combe raleigh side of dunkeswell common, west of the road. More or less circular, 2.4m to 3m deep, and 6m to 9m in diameter. Possibly the dunkeswell iron pits were worked by the monks of the abbey.(hutchinson).

DOWNES, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV56633.

Downes disagrees with hutchinson's conclusions regarding e devon iron pits, saying there is no real evidence of ironworking. Suggests the pits were dug to quarry chert for building materials (downes).
