Full description
Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV177625.
Tower with saddleback top and pinnacles by a. E. Street in 1884-1885. Interior with clustered shafts of coloured devon marble. E and w window designed by burne-jones, who also painted chancel and n and s walls (pevsner).

Built in response to rising population of torbay. Rectangular. Extended when tower added. Founder was rev r. Mallock of cockington court. Mostly limestone with some ham stone for variation. The interior contains 117 pillars of dark limestone with coloured mosaics on the font and pulpit. Rare complete immersion font carved from a single block of oreston marble.(beer).

Church of st. John dated 1865-1871 by g. E. Street, architecture, the tower with unfortunate saddleback roof and pinnacles added by a. E. Street in 1884-85. Prominent position overlooking harbour. Stone rubble and dressed sandstone. Tall nave, aisles and lower chancel. Effective arrangement of clerestory lancets grouped in broad arched recessed. Shallow buttresses. Interior with polychromy of polished devon marbles. Clustered shafts to arcades, colonettes to clerestory. East and west windows by morris and co, designed by burne-jones who also painted chancel north and south walls. Lady chapel decorated by j. D. Sedding, 1840. Rich use of ironwork typical of street (doe).

Church of st. John, montpelier terrace, torquay. First built in 1823, cut into the hillside. Rebuilt on larger scale by g. E. Street in 1861-1867. The scene of the first 19th century "ritual prosecutions. " (hoskins).
