A chapel was built at powderham castle in 1717.(hoskins). The chapel was re-licensed in 1861 (oldham). The first chapel was built at the north end of the great hall (though separated from it by other chambers) by 1450 when there is a documentary reference to it. This was converted into a drawing room in 1717 when a new chapel was built. This was destroyed(?) during the mid 19th century alterations and the castle grange was converted into a chapel. Polwhele (1793-1806) describes the finding of human bones "behind the original chapel", although author casts doubt on this (harding).

DEAN MILLES, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV99074.

Respondent to dean milles questionnaire noted the only chapel in the parish to be at powderham castle (dean milles).
