The road from topsham to exeter along which goods were transported during the medieval period; became especially important when ships could no longer pass up to exeter because of the weirs.(jackson). This road follows the course of the roman road from the south gate of exeter to the coastal settlement near or at topsham. A small fort probably existed there (in the grounds of the retreat). Topsham road follows the probable course.(margary).
