Yettington is yetematon or yethemeton in the book of fees of 1242. It appears in other documents during the middle ages with various spellings. Possibly from the old english geat, haeme and tun, the whole meaning 'the farm of the settlers by the gate'. The 'gate' may be the comparatively narrow part of the valley here on either side of which the hills recede (gover + mawer + stenton).

Exeter Archaeology, 2003-2004, East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Archaeological Survey, Site No. 1940 (Archive - Survey). SDV351568.

Yettington is mentioned in Domesday. Name may mean 'the farm of the settlers near the gate', the gate possibly being the narrow part of valley here.
