Southwood is listed in Testa de Nevil as held by Philip de Furnellis, together with Nyweland (Newland in Cullompton parish). This Southwood lay in Hairidge Hundred and is thought to be Southwood in Broadhembury, the Henberie of Domesday. It was formerly called Chilleton (the Ceorl's town) and given the name Southwood to distinguish it from Charlton in Plympton.
