Full description

Reichel, O. J., 1913, The Hundred of Stanborough or Dippeforda in the Time of 'Testa de Nevil' AD 1243, 186,187,204 (Article in Serial). SDV336180.

At Thurlestone the site of the Domesday Manor of Torlestan. In 1086 held by Judhel of Totnes in Demesne. Some descents, and the history of the Advowson, to 1463 are given.

During the medieval period the ecclesiastical parish of Thurlestone was formed incorporating the smaller Manor of Buckland. The Manor remained part of the Earl of Devon's South Hams holdings until the mid 19C.

Thurlestone takes its name from the 'Dyrelan Stane', a distinctive 'thirled' or pierced rock, which lies offshore to the south. The land was divided into holdings & was part of a large estate by the Saxon period. It was part of the South Hams granted by King Aethelwulf to himself in a Charter of 847.
