Site visit 5th June 1973. Farmhouse incorporating the remains of a manor house. An impressive stone-built 17th century house with three large chimneys. Dateable cut stone features have been taken to Lew House. Photos
Department of Environment, 1985, Thrushelton, 182 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV261712.
Orchard Barton formerly listed as orchard house farmhouse, 17th century with late 19th century alterations. Stone rubble with slate roof, asbestos slates. Two large lateral stone stacks. One rendered lateral stack and a 20th century brick shaft. The original plan could have been h-plan. Sabine baring-gould removed many 17th century features of the house and most of the missing features of the house have probably been incorporated at lew house. A photograph of orchard barton in the late 19th century in the possession of the owner shows the granite mullioned windows intact. Of the 17th century built only a fireplace, a plaster frieze and part of a moulded cornice survive with some roof trusses and some re-used hollow-chamfered jambs in a fireplace sited in the main block. Many blocked windows in the rear. Some 20th century casements. Two storeys. The left-hand cross wing known as the servants' wing was adapted for use as a calfhouse in the 20th century.
