'Yard Downs' was Heireda in Domesday. It formed part of the holdings of the Engineer Officer (Arbalestarii). It was held by Richard under Gobold. Before the conquest, it belonged to Chippin, or Chipping. In 1303, it was called Yurdon and held by William Thorlock. Yarde Farm to the south (see PRN 16215) was also part of this holding, although the two farms are some distance apart.
