Full description
Fox, A., 1951, Eighteenth Report on the Archaeology and Early History of Devon (Article in Serial). SDV15558.
Triangular stone loom weight, found in 1948. Exact find spot unknown. It has a small single perforation drilled at its apex, 8 millimetres in diameter, and there are signs of wear and ancient fractures around it. A vesicular spilite (a sodic basic lave) from the ashprington series, locally available. It was used for keeping the warp tense on an upright loom and the type first appears in the early Iron Age, as at Glastonbury lake village, made of baked clay. Other details: 39.
A triangular loom-weight of stone, measuring 5.1 inches by 3 inches and 1.4 inches thick, was found by a ploughman in 1945 in Brentor parish. It has a small single perforation, 0.3 inches diameter. It is early Iron Age, or later in date. Now owned by Mr.J. C. Hilton, Clovelly Dykes.
Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1951, SX48SE2 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV262169.
Apparently the same as that reported by Lady Fox to the Ordnance Survey, whose card however records date of discovery as 1951.
