Name:Plym Bridge, Plymouth


Narrow road bridge over the River Plym. The bridge is mainly 18th century but built on earlier piers; the springing of earlier arches can be seen just above water level. A bridge existed here as early as 1238.

This may be the 'plymbridge' mentioned in dawlish church accounts. In 1618, money was given towards the cost of repairs (godfrey).

Plymbridge road, plym bridge. Mainly xviii century but piers are earlier. Stone rubble hump-backed bridge of five spans with semi-circular arches having recessed arch-springs. Cutwaters and parapet. The springings of earlier arches can be seen just above the water level. First listed 25/1/1954 (doe).

Plym Bridge. Narrow road bridge over River Plym partly in City of Plymouth. Circa C18 on earlier piers. Killas rubble. Five semi-circular arches with slightly recessed arch rings. Cutwaters to piers on both upstream and downstream sides. Parapets with chamfered granite coping stones, splayed ut at either end over the abutments. "A bridge existed here as early as 1238, on the important main road from Tavistock to Plympton". Springing of the earlier arches can be seen just above water level.

The asset was previously listed twice also at List entry 1386329. That entry was removed from the List on 23 September 2016.

The GIS triangle depiction was moved slightly from SX5236458714 to SX5237758709. Thus placing it on the parish boundary between City of Plymouth and Sparkwell, in South Hams which passes through the building. The grid reference was removed from the Details text.]
