Summary

The ferry from exmouth to starcross (from sx99408060 to sx97808177) originally ran from the medieval settlement then called pratteshide which was in the manor of littleham in the 12th century. In 1122 this manor and the right of the ferry passed to sherborne abbey. There are references to the disputes between the abbot and the city of exeter in the 13th, 15th and 16th centuries, over this valuable privilege (davidson).

The ferry from exmouth to starcross is the oldest recorded ferry in devon and cornwall. Documentary references to it in 1267 (bush).

Ordgar gave littleham to the abbey of horton including the rights to the ferry to starcross where the landing point was at the foot of stone stairs by a cross set up by the abbott (f. C. T. Citing worth).
