Full description

Alexander, J. J., 1933, The Beginnings of Ilfracombe, 211-212 (Article in Serial). SDV93444.

Ilfracombe was the site of the manor of Alfreincoma, as recorded in the Domesday survey. At the time it was held by Baldwin of the honour of Okehampton. The author suggests that the place and its name had an 8th century origin.

Timms, S., 1987, The Archaeology of North Devon Towns, 3 (Un-published). SDV354573.

A medieval document suggests that Ilfracombe may have had a town wall in the Middle Ages. However, such defences, if indeed they were ever built, have left no trace.
