There was an ancient ford on the River Otter above the bridge. This may be where the Roman road crossed the river; there is raised ground leading from the road behind River Cottage to the river.

Possible point where Roman road crossed the river, which may have been more easily forded then. Course of road not definitely known. There is said to be raised ground leading to river.
