Summary

In 1086 bishopsteignton, west teignmouth and chudleigh formed the bishop's manor of taintona as it was called in the domesday survey (reichel). Bishopsteignton was one of the twelve manors in devon held by the bishop of exeter in the early 14th century.(walker). Bishopsteignton belonged to the bishops of exeter from before the norman conquest and was one of their richest manors.(hoskins). In 1084 bishopsteignton belonged to osbern, bishop of exeter. Edward the confessor had granted it to bishop leofric before the conquest. In 1549, edward vi recommended bishop voysey to grant the manor to sir andrew dudley, knight (s. G. ). The fate of the manor around the time of the dissolution and reformation is described, as well as its later history.(benthall).

Bishopsteignton was part of the lands belonging to the Bishop of Exeter and was so prior to 1066. the manor included land for 55 ploughs, 10 acres of meadow, pasture 4 leagues long and half a league wide and woodland 1 league long by 1 league wide [a league is about 3 miles]. There were 57 villagers, 36 smallholders, 14 slaves and 10 pigmen. The manor also had 24 salt-houses and 9 houses in Exeter.
