Summary

There has been a mill here since at least 1586. It may have been a fulling mill which was later converted to paper making. There were paper mills operating here in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Two paper mills are marked Higher Kensham and Lower Kensham.

Conversions had taken place by 1788, first new buildings erected in 1804. Detailed history of the mills and its owners given. A disastrous fire occurred in 1892, after which it was used as an electricity generating station

Shorter says that there were three mills at Bradninch under the name of Kensham Mill, two of which were known to be operating between 1767 and 1890, using paper making machines. The first and last known date for the third mill is 1821. Kensham Mill is supposed to be an example of a conversion from a fulling or tucking mill with the decline of the woollen industry.
