Full description

Pulman, G. P. R., Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV103269.

Cloakham, formerly clocombe. Mentioned in 1301 in newenham chartulatory as a tenant under the manor. It was then called claucombe. In 1720 edward smith took a long lease of it from lord petre. About 1732, smith built himself a residence at cloakham and made plantations there. In 1824, the petre estates were purchased by mr. Frampton, who spent alot of money improving the house and laying out the park between the house and the main road. It was he who made the bridge over the axe and, the carriage drive and who built the lodge (wilkin). Cloakham was built by edward smith about 1732. The smiths were members of the society of friends, and in the quakers burying ground at membury is a headstone to two members of the family. Cloakham may be derived from the old english word "clough" = a wooded valley on the side of a hill. The river at the foot of the eminence upon which cloackham house is situated is crossed by a stone bridge of a single arch with an ornamented wooded parapet. The carriage drive passes over it and winds through a park called the lawn. The principal entrance to the park is at the lodge (pulman).
