Site visit 3rd November 1953. An unimportant or unclassified grange hermitage founded in the reign of Henry II and dissolved in 1414. An alien Benedictine cell dependent on Montebourg. Granted to Syon Abbey. Sometimes reckoned as a distinct priory, although Oliver [Monasticon] doubts this (citing Knowles and Hadcock).

Axmouth is listed either as a grange or a priory. It was possibly an alien grange dependent upon Montebourg, belonging to the benedictine (black) monks. Founded in the time of Henry II and dissolved in 1414. It is also sometimes reckoned as a priory and sometimes as a parcel of Lodres. Oliver (Monasticon, 1846 ) doubts if it was a priory granted to Syon Abbey.

Axmouth Grange or Priory was one of sixty plus religious houses investigated as part of the Devon Religious Houses Survey, a Devon County Council Rescue Project. The aims of the survey were to identify how much remains of the site and to consider how any surviving remains could be conserved for the future. The work comprised a rapid assessment of the site, summarising the present state of knowledge, followed by a more detailed survey where sufficient evidence and remains survived. See separate entries for the results of the surveys.

The location and status of the site is unknown. There has been little research and there are no known architectural remains or buried archaeological deposits. Further documentary research is required in order to locate the site.
