Summary

Cropmarks forming part of a large rectangular enclosure with inner and outer ditches are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1975 onwards, to the south of Lower Living, Newton St. Cyres. Other fainter cropmarks to the north and east (MDV121891)
appear to represent a field system.

Rapid examination of ap suggests the presence of a probable prehistoric or roman enclosed settlement site visible as cropmarks of a complex of rectilinear enclosures, linear features and probable field boundaries, in an area bounded by sx86919932, sx87129922, sx87119937 + sx86929937. The fact that some of the cropmarks overlap indicates that the features are of at least 2 phases (nmr citing miller).

Lower living. Part of a large rectangular enclosure with inner and outer ditches visible on cuc air photographs. All the northern side of both inner and outer ditches, and the northern part (bts 32-4) of east and west sides. Very strong rectilinear mark. Inner ditch c.40m along north side, outer ditch c.130m. The outer ditch of this feature appears to cut sx89ne/43. Other fainter cropmarks appear to represent a field system, not related to this site (griffith).

Vis=10/1/1992 (robinson) enclosure lies on the level top of a spur above the valley floor. The south side may be utilising a steep river terrace as defence. No visible earthworks (dprfp).

A probable prehistoric or Roman enclosed settlement site is visible on aerial photographs (p1-16) as cropmarks of a complex of rectilinear enclosures, linear features and probable field boundaries. Most clearly visible is a concentric rectilinear enclosure; the inner circuit having dimensions of 49m x 34m, and the outer 100m x 75m. Both are masked along their south side by an extant field boundary. Other cropmarks immediately east of the enclosure appear to represent a field system, not related to this site. The features were digitally plotted as part of the National Mapping Programme.
