Full description

STEPHENS, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV23026.

Originally topsham sluice. Built by hurd (stephens).

CLARK, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV23450.

Trenchard's sluice, or lower sluice. Site of entrance to exeter canal from 1676 to 1825. With the extension of the canal in 1676, a new entrance with a "very large sluice" was constructed here, which was known as trenchard's sluice. This was a single sluice (not a lock) which caused continued navigational difficulties throughout its life. It was repaired many times (being closed for 6 months 1790-91), and received new gates in 1819. This entrance was blocked up in 1825 when the canal was further extended (clark).
