Summary

Silver Roman coin of circa 63BC was found in Barley Lane in 1925. The early date of the coin is perhaps explained by Tacitus' comment that some Roman soldiers preferred obsolete coins from Roman mints.

Full description

Lega-Weekes, E., 1924-1925, Roman coin in Exeter, 345 (Article in Serial). SDV22649.

Coin found in 1925 in Barley Lane, Exeter. Silver, about the size of silver threepenny bit. Consular coin of M Cipius, dated about 63BC.

Chalk, E. S., 1926-1927, Roman coin in Exeter, 19 (Article in Serial). SDV22651.

With reference to early date of this coin, Chalk, citing Tacitus, notes preference of German soldiers for obsolete coins from Roman mints.

Collings, A. G., 2005, Archaeological Assessment of the Crossmead Conference Centre, Barley Lane, Exeter, No. 14 (Report - Assessment). SDV355074.

A silver consular coin of M. Cipius, dating to around 63BC, was found in Barley Lane in 1925. It was assumed to have been washed out of a hedgebank by recent heavy rain.
