Behenna, J., Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV105527.

Built as "albertville", 1896.3813 tons, 352ft long, 44.2ft beam wrecked at whitechurch (behenna).

The mail steamer jebba was wrecked near bolt tail in april 1907. She carried a cargo of rubber, ivory and fruit as well as passengers from the west coast of africa. Nearly all the cargo of the jebba was salved (elliot).

Jebba, registered london. West africa to plymouth + liverpool in ivory, palm oil + rubber. A 'jebba' class vessel, steel built with two decks. Built by sir raylton dixon and co ltd, middlesbrough, yard no 421 for cie belge maritime du congo as albertville in 1896. Machinery by t richardson and son ltd, 419 nhp, 12 knots. Bought by african steamship co, liverpool and renamed in 1898, also re-registered in london and at 2460 net, 3812 gross. Vessel no.109969. Ran aground in fog. Capt at loss was jjc mills. Much of rubber and ivory was salvaged at the time, sold to exploitation and recovery venture for 100. Inquiry no.7065 gives details.

Vis=13-may-1969 wreckage lies directly out from cave at ramillies cove some 40 feet, more wreckage 150 feet east of position. Wreck broken up, stern still recognisable, boilers intact stern straddles wreck of hms ramillies in position 50 14 20n 003 52 03w bow lies 300 feet away hard against cliff in 8 feet of water, pieces of pottery scattered about due to current.

Vis=14-sep-1975 dived on, found wreckage in above position, well broken up, ramillies cove is in 50 14 12n 003 51 54w.

Vis=17-dec-1985 much wreckage, double bottoms, girders and boiler remain in general depth 7 to 10m. Lying e/w, about 0.5 miles se of redrot bay and just west of two large caves in the cliffs (nmr, citing hydrographic office).

An elder dempster liner. Passengers and crew saved by rocket line and bosun's chair from the cliffs above. Jebba lies 20 yards east of ramilles, in shallow water. Brass fittings have become "welded" into surrounding rock (mcdonald).
