Name:WINDMILL in the Parish of Woodbury

Summary

A windmill was built behind parsonage, in woodbury, in the 13th century. It was built at the instigation of sir william albemarle. It appears that its success, if at all, was short-lived, and by 1289 it was said to be unprofitable. By 1321 it had become redundant. 'windmillfield' and 'windmill hill' are noted (brighouse).

One, centred at sy01888848, is now covered by a small orchard while the other, centred at sy02048788, occupies the crest of a hill immediately n of the village. There is no ground evidence at either site to suggest the presence of a windmill (nmr, citing probert).
