Church of st. Mary and st. Giles. The cruciform plan suggests a c13 or c14 core, the church is said to have been dedicated in 1319, c15 alterations, restoration of the 1830s and 1840s, reseating of 1906 by r. W. Sampson of sidmouth. Rendered stone, slate roofs. Chancel, nave, west tower, north and south transept, se vestry. Date of 1838 on south transept presumably refers to restoration, vestry presumably also late 1830s. St. Mary and st. Giles, parish church.15th century transepts, north and south plastered all over externally, according to a stone in the vestry completed 1403. Credence in the chancel bears the same date. Fine chancel screen of unusual type was brought from elsewhere and fitted here; the groining is perfect on both sides; cornices are good; fitted with 18th century box pews, probably inserted in 1773, west gallery of the same date; sheaf pew in the north transept is a monument by john bacon r. A (1792) to samuel graces, admiral of the white, who lived at hembury fort; elizabethan chalice (hoskins).
