Summary

Luppitt Mill was built in 1875, although there are documentary references to an earlier mill. All the machinery, including the waterwheel, is intact. The course of the leat is still clearly visible.

'Luppitt Mill (Corn)' is marked on the 1880s-90s 25" OS map.


Department of Environment, 1950, Honiton RD, 28 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV118185.

Phillips, M. C. + Wilson, R. E., 1974 - 1977, Water Mills in East Devon, 304-305 (Article in Serial). SDV42946.

At Luppitt a grist mill powered by water. Four-storey mill building built of stone with ashlar coigns and slate roof. Building dated 1875 although there are documentary references from as early as 1780 and the nearby dwelling is probably older. Water for power supplied by leat from river Otter. The overshot wheel and machinery are all in good repair despite disuse since 1939.

All of the mill workings are intact and the building maintained although contents gradually deteriorating. Nothing has been touched since the mill went out of use. The course of the leat running behind (east) of the mill to the overshot wheel is clearly visible. Wheel is decaying, owners intend to restore it. This mill has not been adequately recorded.
