Full description

KITCHEN + BUTTERY, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV136195.

Chantry founded c.1463. Chantry house is a late 15th century two part house, built of flint with ashlar dressings. Chimney stack in the gable ends and a projecting staircase and garderobe on the east side. A cross passage divides the low hall from the two service rooms (kitchen + buttery).

An early rectory with the original timber screen between hall and kitchen still in place. There is a painted oak roof and large stone fireplaces in hall and kitchen. A newel stone staircase at the end of the screens passage leads to the first floor. Perhaps a result of early xvi century rebuilding (anon psanhs).

The first floor has a lofty chamber over the hall with an open (archbraced) roof. The chamber to the north is slightly lower with a cockloft above (patin).

DBA undertaken along a corridor associated with the A30/A303 between Honiton and Devonshire Inn. This study is intended to inform the development of options for improvements to the A30/A303 between Honiton and Devonshire Inn.

The Chatry and the Church of St Nicholas are located in close proximity to each other in the village of Combe Raleigh. The church has a prominent positon within the village on a low rise and the Chanrtry is situated within a secluded garden defined by high hedges. Both assets and the entire village are located within a combe.

Visibility from the combe in most directions apart from to the south is screened by wooded hills. The Site is entirely screened by Crook Hill. As such the Site is not consisted to be located within the setting of either the church or the Chantry and will have no effect on the significance of either building.
