Summary

A Tudor manor house stood more or less on the site of Castle Hill Mansion, but no picture or plan of it survives. The manor house was rebuilt in 1684 and pulled down in 1732 when the present mansion was built.

The original Tudor or medieval building had a forecourt looking north into the hillside.

The property came to Martin Fortescue by marriage in 1454. There was a manor house more or less on the site of the present house,, but no picture or plan of it survives. The parish church stood nearby. The manor house was rebuilt in 1684 and pulled down in 1732 when the present house was built by the first Lord Fortescue. He gave it the name of Castle Hill. He also laid out the grounds, building the arch and the castle.

A manor house, possibly built in 1454, stood on or near the site of the present house. It had a forecourt looking north. It was largely rebuilt in 1684-94 (citing Fortescue and Hoskins).
Site visit 6th November 1970. There are no notable remains of the 17th century house.

The present Palladian mansion incorporates the remains of an earlier, Tudor structure that was itself rebuilt in 1684.
