Summary
The cottages probably incorporate the remains of a three room cross passage house, possibly the property owned by John Andrew, mayor of Bideford in 1600. The cottages, close to the River Torridge, were jacked up in 1991 in order to raise them above flood levels.

Possibly a property owned by john andrew, prominent bideford merchant and benefactor, alderman + mayor of bideford in 1600. Originally in the form of a hall - house (scrutton).

Vis=-/10/1980 (meade) l-shaped plan, remains 3 room cross passage structure, now divided into two. Isolated situation on opposite side of river torridge from weare giffard. Cob on stone footings. Modern slate roof. Possible well under floor of east room. Details of building construction, plaster frieze, and painted inscription on worksheet.
Advertiser, 1991, Lift-off for Weare Giffard Flood Cottages (Article in Serial). SDV260833.
National Rivers Authority raised houses at Weare Giffard. Houses raised by approximately 1.5 metres. To lift the cottages a slab of reinforced concrete was placed at floor level. Over 450 tonnes of concrete and 60 tonnes of steel were used at the six cottages. Two of the cottages were Yeo Cottages, the other four were at Dock Cottages.
