Church of st. John the baptist. C15, but more than one building phase and the latest maybe early c16; restored 1889-91 at which time the chancel was rebuilt. Local stone and flint rubble with beerstone and hamstone ashlar detail; lead roof to nave, aisles transepts and porch, slate to chancel. Relatively large parish church with cruciform plan, north and south aisles, west tower, south porch and c19 vestry and organ loft on north side of the chancel. Most of the church is perpendicular in style but the c19 chancel is decorated. See doe list for full details (doe).

REICHEL, 1898, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV38916.

There may have been an earlier church here, at the time of the domesday survey, an oratory for the church of mont st. Michel, which then owned property here (reichel, 1898).

REICHEL, IN DCNQ, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV44347.

Yarcombe was once the property of the church or convent of the holy trinity in caen. The original charter exists in france (reichel, in dcnq).

Bucknall, J., 1995, Saint John the Baptist, Yarcombe, Devon (Un-published). SDV346789.

A fine homogenous structure of the 14th- and 15th centurues with west tower, nave and aisle, south porch, transepts and chancel. Built largely of churt with Hamstone dressings. Some use too of Beerstone.
The nave, south transept and lower two stages of the tower are 14th century. The north aisle and north transept were added in the 15th century. The south aisle is a little later, as is the upper stage of the tower. The 14th century chancel with its remarkable squints from the transepts was substantially rebuilt in the 19th century. The organ chamber was constructed at the same time.
The roofs of this church are ancient. The nave roof is a good example of a Devon arch braced roof with moulded ribs and purlins. It formerly had plastered infill panels. The south transept has a similar roof. Both are boarded above the rafters. The south aisle roof is relatively flat and has richly moulded purlins and principal rafters.
