Four salterns were recorded in the manor of beer, or bera, in domesday. They were situated near whitcliff on the streamlet in beer and were probably worked by the two saltworkers belonging to honiton. It was stated in domesday that from the manor of beer, "one ferling of land and four salterns have been taken away, which drogo now holds of the count of mortain" (reichel).
