Before 1066 ashclyst farm was held by four saxon thanes. William the conqueror gave it to baldwin the sheriff who gave it to the canons of st mary of the castle of exeter. At the dissolution it was given to thomas godwin. It was also known as 'ash-cliffe' (nt).
