Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

'Butlass' farmstead is shown on 19th century map as a group of farm buildings around several irregular shaped yards and surrounded by small orchards.

Butlas farm in Brixton is the probable approximate site of a medieval estate recorded as Botesforda in the Domesday survey. An account of its possession in the 13th century is given.

Butlas was mentioned as 'Plethameston' in a deed of 1250 and 'Pledmeston' in 1300. It was 'Buttelers' in 1504 and a Richard Butler was living in the parish in 1525.

The estate of Botesforda is interpreted as Battisford at NGR SX57255485. Butlas farmstead was named Plethameston in 1250.

Late 18th century map evidence suggests the farm once formed a small hamlet but no visible evidence survives. The existing farm buildings are all of post medieval date.
