Start Farm represents the survival into modern times of a medieval farmstead which belonged to the manor of Stoke in Hamme. It is documented as Le Stert in an inquest held in 1390 which records its extent and value.

Site visit to the outfarm at Start. An interesting complex of buildings including an end bank barn with a cow house on the ground floor. The barn faces a small walled yard which contains two smaller animal houses. All the buildings are constructed of local slatestone rubble but are now roofless.
