HER Number:MDV19546
Name:Clapper bridge crossing the Stannon Brook

Summary

The remains of a clam bridge crosses the Stannon Brook at SX 64998129. Of the initial three side by side slabs only the two outer stones remain in situ; the middle stone in now partially buried in the stream bed. There is no trace of specially constructed abutments, the slabs are placed on large boulders outcropping in the stream banks. The two in situ slabs measure 1.6m long, 1.0m wide and 0.2m thick making the completed structure approximately 3m wide, spanning a gap of 1.2m.
This bridge probably dates from the C18th or C19th but it cannot be linked with any known trackway existing at that time. It is set across the narrow stream 1m below the steep sided banks with no sign of any approach cutting.
