Full description

DMG, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV68198.

The most likely site for this is that area encompassed by the river and roads immediately south of the barton (dmg).

RCHM, CITING DYER, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV76165.

Dmg (above) suggests it might have been located in area immediately s of affeton barton almost encircled by roads and river. Field evidence is not very convincing. There is a 200m length of very substantial hedge bank (2m high) on the e. Bank is lower but stone-faced on n side. Bank becomes very insubstantial on s side and there is no good boundary on the w side (rchm, citing dyer).

Stuckly, d. /tda/108(1976)1-11/presidential address: a devon parish lost, a new home discovered.

GALLANT, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV943.

Afton is shown on speed's map of 1610 bordering little dart park to the s of the river but no house is shown. At the beginning of c18 dennis stucly let the barton to affeton but reserved the free warren to 'hunt, hawk and fish' (gallant).

Shirley, E. P., 1867, Some Account of English Deerparks (Monograph). SDV314505.

Afton. Deerpark marked in saxton's map. Also mentioned in dr borde's list, written temp henry viii (shirley).

Exeter Archaeology, 1993 - 1994, Untitled Source (Archive - Survey). SDV339669.

Vis=8/7/1994 (emafu) deer park is shown on saxton's map as being s of the river, but mapping and location are very schematic and imprecise.
