Full description

Unknown, 1840-1849, Bratton Fleming (Cartographic). SDV343086.

Land on which this site lies was a 95-acre holding known as South Kipscombe in the hands of Caius College, Cambridge in 1839. No buildings or other settlement features shown on Tithe map.

Kipscombe documented in 1249, 1330, 1359 and 1492.

A small deserted settlement site on a spur in Bratton Fleming parish. One or two small closes, visible on aerial photograph.

Extends across the neck of the promontory. Remains of what are probably three long houses, and several raised bank enclosures, possible garden can be identified. Features are well preserved. Other details: Plan.

Tentatively equated with ancient camp on Bratton Down described in the 19th century.

Project included field survey, documentary research and aerial photograph work. Piece of Medieval pot found on site. Various additional features observed in the vicinity.

Visited on 13th december 1989. Earthworks remain in stable condition. One good longhouse. Trackway from road also visible as earthwork. Aerial photographs and survey of site carried out in 1988/9. Site is on public bridleway and to be safeguarded during new planting of valley slopes.

The remains of Kipscombe deserted medieval village are visible on a promontory west of Wallover Wood, Bratton Fleming. They comprise a series of well preserved earthworks and banks including the remains of three long houses. Further down the slope to the north the remains of two lynchets are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs. The settlement is smaller than that at North Thorne in Bratton Fleming but the two are probably contemporary. Other details: Monument Number 34543.
