A small sub-circular pit or depression visible as an earthwork to the north of Hooken Cliffs is probably the remains of a possibly spring-fed pond on South Down Common, Beer. The former pond is visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s as an earthwork pit up to 12 metres in diameter surrounded by a low earthwork bank. By 1986 the pond has been ploughed out and is visible only as a dark soilmark 8 to 9 metres across surrounded by a paler soilmark, presumably partly comprised of the plough spread material of the pond bank. The site of the pond remains visible on digital images derived from Lidar data as a hollow up to circa 15 metres in diameter. The date of the pond is unknown. It is likely to have been in use throughout the 19th century but it is possible it has much earlier origins and could potentially be associated with the surrounding field system of potential prehistoric date.

Pink, F., 2014, South Devon Coast Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey Desk-Based Assessment (Interpretation). SDV357736.

A roughly circular plot 1227 on the Seaton and Beer Tithe Map of 1840 is recorded as a 'Pond' within the Tithe Apportionment. The feature is situated within a much larger plot 1228. An oval feature is depicted in this location on both the First and Second Edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps but is not present on the Ordnance Survey Master Map.

Ordnance Survey, 2015, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV357601.

The feature is no longer depicted.
