Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1977, SX66SW80 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV173495.

(19/08/1977) Centred SX 62636200. A settlement found during field work consisting of an enclosure and four hut circles (two detached), situated on a well-drained, clitter-strewn south west facing slope at 310m OD.
The enclosure, which is incomplete, is roughly oval on plan measuring 50m north to south by 30m transversely (0.1 hectare.) The walling is of double-faced orthostatic construction, 2.1m in width, but in poor condition. Two circular house platforms, average diameter 5.3m, with fragments of wall foundations, are linked by the enclosure wall.
The two free-standing terraced hut circles, on of Type II, have an average internal diameter of 6.1m, fragmentary walling 1.3m wide.
The interior of the enclosure and several other small areas have been cleared suggesting cultivation (Type 2 huts! SX 56 NE 71).
Surveyed at 1:10 000 on MSD and at 1:2500 for AO Records.

'Watercombe Gate' remains of an extensively robbed enclosure. Oval-shaped, interestingly the rubble infill has been robbed from the eastern side, leaving a double row of evenly spaced vertical slabs, up to a metre high. The south-western quadrant of the enclosure is lacking any wall remains. Badly damaged remains of two huts against the uphill side, and two slightly better preserved huts lie to the south-west of the enclosure.
