An oval pit circa 45m across is visible as an earthwork fringed by trees on aerial photographs of 1969. The pit is obscured by dense tree cover on aerial photographs of 1946.
The visible earthwork corresponds with a pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map and labelled as ‘Old Quarry’.
It is located in a plot on the Tithe Map for Plympton St Mary (Plot 1276) named Quarry Park, supporting the interpretation that the pit predates circa 1840.
The pit is depicted as a larger earthwork on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch Second Edition map and labelled simply as ‘Quarry’. This might indicate that the pit was returned to use in the early 20th century.
The pit is not identifiable as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. It was probably therefore levelled after circa 1970.
The pit was not transcribed by the survey.
