HER Number:MDV20243
Name:Field system and stone clearance heaps

Summary

Remains of a field system with eight clearance heaps. The walls are visible as turf-covered rickles of stone, about 2m wide and 0.2m high, forming the boundary of a rectangular field or cleared area. The heaps are all turf covered circular or oval mounds, varying from about 2m in diameter to 6.6m by 4m, and generally about 0.4m high. The field probably represents part of a prehistoric field system, more of which is possibly hidden beneath the peat around the south.

(05/09/1989) SX 62917982 Situated on a gentle S facing hillslope of rough grass and heather about 435m OD overlooking Rowtor Marsh are the remains of a field system. Its fragmentary walls, with eight stone clearance heaps, covers an area of about 1.5ha. The walls are visible as turf-covered rickles of stone, about 2m wide and 0.2m high, forming the boundary of a rectangular field or cleared area about 87m E-W by 73m. To the N and NE the ground steepens and the cover of the outcropping rock and boulders thickens. Within the north east part of the field are four stone clearance heaps and another four lie a few metres outside to the SE. They are all turf covered circular or oval mounds, varying from about 2m in diameter to 6.6m by 4m, and generally about 0.4m high. The field probably represents part of a prehistoric field system, more of which is possibly hidden beneath the peat around the south.

English Heritage, 2004, Schedule Note (Schedule Document). SDV320500.

Monument includes a cairnfield and irregular shaped field, defined by a 2m wide stone rubble wall up to 0.2m high. The cairnfield includes two clusters, each containing four cairns. The cairns are circular or oval with an average height of 0.4m.
