Ministry of Public Building and Works, Southleigh and Fairway Group of Barrows on Broad Down (Schedule Document). SDV342868.

One of two small mounds near summit of Ball Hill, Broad Down. Not on Ordnance Survey map. Part of southern section of Bronze Age cemetery extending to Farway Hill and Gittisham Hill.

Site visit on 02/02/1982. Grass covered, flattish, circular barrow of peaty earth and flint, with no ditch. No evidence of excavation other than a half metre square removal of turf near the centre. Diameter 8.5 metres, height 0.3 metres. Other details: Plan, site A.

Site visit on 04/11/1992. Not visible from footpath. Low mounds and pits in this area in heathland.

Salvatore, J. P., 1997, Two Bowl Barrows on Ball Hill, Broad Down (Un-published). SDV342960.

The northern of two bowl barrows which lie adjacent to each other near the summit of Ball Hill, at the northern end of the Broad Down round barrow cemetery. Flat topped, 0.7 metres high with a diameter of 7.4 metres. Only the faint traces of a ditch on the north side of the the barrow were visible at the time of visit, other ditch traces may have been hidden by undergrowth. Exposure of the west side of the mound, presumably by rabbits, has revealed poor quality flint nodules in the barrow matrix.

Site visit on 5th April 2002, to ploughed area on Ball Hill adjacent to barrows. No finds were recovered or features identified. None of the barrows appear to have been affected.

A survey by Exeter Archaeology was undertaken after ploughing close to the barrow group in July 2002. This barrow survives, circa 7.5 metres in diam and 0.5-0.6 metres high, although area trampled by cattle.
