Summary
Meeth clay works. Although clay deposits were known to be here, and extraction considered in the late 19th cent the meeth quarries were not opened until 1920's, receiving impetus from the construction of the north devon + cornwall junction light railway. Tunnels were dug to extract the clay. History, ownership, management and rolling stock described (messenger). A grant of 1896 gives licence to the n devon clay company to search for clay, construct railways, shafts etc in this area (dro). Vis=22/2/1983 (griffiths). The quarry is rapidly expanding in open pits, towards stockleigh moors and woolladon. The railway line is no longer in use and part has become a roadway. The grant of 1896 seems not to have been taken up. For clayworks at wooladon see ss50nw/32.
