Historical development of the site has been ascertained from a study of historical maps. The 1884 Ordnance Survey map shows a Bone Mill located approximately 50 metres east of the site. This was originally the old engine and boiler house to Bedford Shaft. It was subsequently adapted for use by the Territorial Army and the Air Training Corps.
