Southwood was the site of small farmstead shown on late 18th century drawings. The drawing shows 2 buildings and possibly a third surrounded by a number of small enclosures. Two of the buildings are shown on the Yealmpton Tithe Map. There are a number of documents in the West Devon Record Office concerned with the Tenement of Southwood, dating from the early 18th century onwards. Visited on 10th December 1982. Southwood Barn shown on later maps to the south of the former farmstead is a modern building. The lane which formerly served the farmstead survives as a sot of hollow way defined by a stone wall and earthen banks. The small plots or enclosures have disappeared but part of a stone cider press survives at approximately SX59255447. A site visit on 24th March 1983 revealed part of the east wall of a barn, 21.6 metres long, surviving to a height of about 1 metre forming the west wall of the lane. The position of the 'court and linhay' shown on the Tithe Map Apportionment is probably marked by a rectangular platform.
