New Mills were erected for the benefit of the tenants of the Lord of the Manor of Modbury. They were mentioned in a deed concerning the Champernownes dated 1693 and in 1703 consisted of a grist mill and house. In 1771 'New Mills' consisted of a millhouse, two water grist mills and a treble mill and three water grist mills with the mill house and about 5 acres of water meadow and orchard were let in 1803. The water supply was the tailrace from Sheepham Mill and the blocked in bridge can be seen at Sheepham Bidge. The mill probably went out of use in the early 20th century.
