Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Abbotsbury marked on 1880s-1890s 25 inch Ordnance Survey map. A large house in extensive grounds reached by a curving drive off Exeter Road. To the north-east of the house are several rectangular buildings presumably stables and outbuildings associated with the gardens.

The grounds and acilliary buildings are depicted on the 1904-1906 25 inch Ordnance Survey map but the house has gone. Housing development is beginning to encroach on the grounds.

At the time of the 1840 Tithe survey Abbotsbury was owned and occupied by William D'Arcy. The property comprised the dwelling house with offices, yard and a shrubbery, a walled and a kitchen garden together with a lawn, plantation, orchard and backfield (plots 728-734).
William F. D'Arcy is recorded as head of the household in the 1861 census for High Week. See report for more information including lists of industries and trades in Newton Abbot at about that time.
